About Shanghai Stock Exchange
The Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) is the largest stock exchange in mainland China and a cornerstone of the modern Chinese financial system. It lists massive state-owned enterprises, banks, and energy companies, alongside a growing "STAR Market" designed to compete with NASDAQ for tech listings.
Unlike Hong Kong, the SSE is primarily a market for domestic investors trading "A-shares" in Renminbi (CNY), though the "Stock Connect" program now allows some international access.
Trading Nuances: The SSE has one of the longest Lunch Breaks in the world, lasting 90 minutes (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM). It also enforces strict Limit Up/Limit Down rules: most stocks cannot rise or fall more than 10% in a single day to prevent extreme volatility.
